Lines and wrinkles form when muscles under the skin contract to form facial expressions. Over time, as your skin ages, these repeated expressions create lasting lines. Both Botox® and Xeomin® are neurotoxins, FDA-approved clinically proven prescription medications that block the release of the chemicals that cause those muscle contractions.

Xeomin is used primarily for frown lines. Botox Cosmetic addresses lines and wrinkles in several areas of the face. The procedure, recovery time, and lasting effects are similar for both products.

Botox treatments use botulinum toxin to treat the visual signs of aging, by reducing or removing wrinkles. The procedure is considered a safe, effective way to treat aging skin. Common areas for Botox® injections include horizontal forehead furrows, vertical lines between the eyebrows, and “crow’s feet” around the eyes. Botox® has proven to be the best non-surgical form of facial rejuvenation and is capable of producing phenomenal improvements in your appearance.

Reasons for Considering a Botox or Xeomin Treatment:

  • Excessive facial wrinkles.
  • Large wrinkles or furrows in your forehead.
  • Small wrinkles or “crow’s feet” around your eyes.
  • Vertical “frown lines” between your eyebrows.

FAQ

  • General procedure

The procedure works by altering the facial muscles related to wrinkles. We will use a cream with local anesthetic on your skin prior to treatment, and apply ice immediately upon completion of the treatment. Typically a small amount (1-2 cc’s) of Botox or Xeomin is injected into the area of the wrinkle. The solution blocks the impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles; the underlying facial muscles relax and the skin begins to smooth out. The effects of a Botox or Xeomin treatment will last approximately three to six months, after which the patient may choose to repeat the procedure.

  • Recovery time

Patients generally return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, however following the post-procedure guidelines will dramatically reduce the length and intensity of the recovery period. Patients should avoid engaging in heavy physical exercise, applying cosmetics, or laying down flat for a minimum of 4 hours after the injections. It is also advisable to avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area for at least 24 hours.

  • What can I expect?

After we assess your goals, our expert injector will inject the solution into specific muscles. Bruising is not typical, but can occur. It will take a few days to start to see the effects of treatment, and may take up to two weeks for full results, so plan your treatment accordingly. Toxin injections are usually given every 3-4 months; consistent treatment will lead to improved results over time.

  • What were common side effects seen in clinical studies?

In studies for forehead lines, 9% of patients experienced headache, 2% had brow drooping, and 2% had eyelid drooping. In the frown line studies, 3% of patients experienced eyelid drooping, and in the crow’s feet studies, 1% of patients experienced eyelid swelling. Other possible side effects include discomfort or pain at the injection site; headache; and eye problems: double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, dry eyes, and swelling of your eyelids. These are not all of the possible serious side effects.

  • Will I look overdone?

When you are treated by a licensed, trained medical expert in facial anatomy, you should not lose the ability to show expression. You should look like you, but more relaxed and rejuvenated.  It is important to talk to your aesthetic specialist about the results you want from treatment.
