A Body Lift is a surgical procedure to improve the shape and tone of the tissue underneath the skin that supports skin and fat. Excess sagging fat and skin are removed that can improve a dimpled, irregular skin surface, known as cellulite. A body lift can be performed in the abdominal area possibly extending around the sides and into the lower back area, the buttocks, the groin that may sag into the inner thigh, as well as the inner, outer, posterior or around the thigh. The areas to be considered for surgery depend on your individual situation.

Reasons for considering a Body Lift:

  • Significant soft tissue looseness in one or more body areas.
  • Body contours that have been lost beneath folds of saggy skin due to weight loss.
  • To be healthier, fitter and to look great!

General Procedure

Body lifts require extensive incisions depending on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed, as well as judgement by your surgeon. Incisions are generally placed where they are hidden by most types of clothing. A common technique of a complete lower body lift uses incisions similar to a bikini pattern to tighten the abdomen, groin, waist, thigh and buttock all in one procedure. An incision around the circumference of the body removes an apron of excess skin and fat while repositioning and tightening tissues. A combination of liposuction and surgical body lifts may be necessary to achieve the improved contour.

Recovery Process

Dressings and bandages will be applied to all incisions following a Body Lift procedure. Small, thin tubes may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood that my collect. Patients sometimes report pain which can be treated with oral medication. Most people require four to six weeks of recovery time before returning to normal activities. Patients should wait six to eight weeks before returning to exercise. While complications are rare, patients can minimize the risk of potential problems by carefully following the post-operative direction given after surgery to ensure a successful recovery.
